Tree on the Lake

The tree that decided to grow in the middle of Lake Lanier, one of the big reservoirs of Atlanta. Picture taken on the water while kayaking on this nice autumn day....

Best Boycott Ever

A small moment of joy:

The fact is that in 1999, Renault, the biggest French car maker, bought and took control of Nissan. So technically, the guy is driving a French car :-)) !

No seriously, that kind of hurts my feeling that someone may feel so strongly about a group of people (the French), which I belong to no matter what, that he feels like sticking this sticker to his bumper. It is true though that I don't see those bumper stickers too often, actually this is the third time I have seen one since 2002, when the fair and balanced dude started his little boycott France thing.

Well after all, I cannot say there is no sign of anti-Americanism in France either...
Aaaah, the world would be so good without all the morons that inhabits it;-) That's life... Peace.

Twenty Mule Team Canyon

While sorting some old pictures, I came across this one which reminded me than not so long ago, I was living on the other side of the continent, driving in the middle of white sandstone canyons... Funny how things change!

One year ago, Twenty Mule Team Canyon, Death Valley National Park, California.

Tree leaf

There are a few weird tree species around where I live... Picture of a tree leaf next to my foot, to get an idea of the size. The trunk of the tree is not even thick, just about as thick as my leg... Weird.

Or maybe I live near a nuke power plant and I don't even know about it!

BlogRoll

I finally added my blogroll to the right column. Thanks to the MovableType MT-Outliner plugin, the blog roll is automatically generated from my RSS reader opml file (I am using sage for mozilla). Everything is kept perfectly in sync, sweet:-)

Anyways here my blogroll as of today:

Small and beautiful river at Sweetwater Creek State Park. Probably the nicest Park of Metro Atlanta I have seen so far (I still have a few of them to try)..
Not bad for a "urban" park, this is just 5 or 6 miles from the Atlanta Perimeter after all!

Squirrel

Funny how squirrels are a lot more active in the fall than in summer. They take a lot more risks trying to get the last nuts no matter where they may be and store them for winter. I almost had to stop last morning while driving to work because one was just sitting in the middle of the road busy catching a nut!

There is couple of those crazy little guys in the trees around my apartment parking lot, always jumping from one branch to another. Here is one of them:

awstats and MyWorld66

MyWorld66 is a website that you can use to generate maps, including a "visited country" map: http://www.world66.com/myworld66/visitedCountries. Pick a few countries in the list, and click on Generate Map. It generates a nice world map where selected countries are highlighted. It also gives you the html code you can insert in you own web page.

For instance, if you pick Canada, USA, France, United Kingdom and Belgium you get the following HTML code:

<img src="http://www.world66.com/myworld66/visitedCountries/worldmap?
visited=CAUSBEFRUK"><br/> <a href="http://www.world66.com/myworld66">create your own visited country map</a>
or check our <a href="http://www.world66.com/europe/netherlands/amsterdam">Amsterdam travel guide</a>

You probably noticed that the last part of the image source url consists of a list of the country codes in the same format as the one used for domain names (ca Canada, us USA, be Belgium, etc...)
I wanted to have such a map that would would highlight the location of people visiting this web site but I did not want to go to the myworld66 site and select the countries found on my site logs which can be tedious...
Besides, I am using awstats for my stats (here) and there is an awstats page that show the country list of your monthly visitors in an html table, one of the column is the 2-digit country code in domain name format. This is mine: http://www.windal.net/cgi-bin/awstats.pl?config=www.windal.net&output=alldomains

Anyway, I made a small CGI that extracts the list of countries from the awstats html page and builds the myworld66 page automatically. My perl skills are very limited, there is probably a smarter way to do that but it works! The script is here.

And here you go for the final result, the map of November visitors (so far) generated automatically with the CGI above:

Watson Mill Bridge

Watson Mill Bridge. An old wood covered bridge, built over the south fork river. 229 feet (70m) long, the longest of the 20 covered bridges that remain in Georgia...
This one is located about 20miles East of Athens.

Built in 1885, it is still standing and solid, you can drive your car on it.

New Style

New style number Fourty sevenish.
This time, I take advantage of a new Firefox feature, which enables you to choose a different style sheet. If you are using the Firefox browser (I guess it may work with Mozilla too), click on the weird button at the bottom-right corner of the desktop. It is magic, you can pick the old style sheet (named "old") and the old style is loaded. Wow.
If you are not using Firefox and you are using ie, don't ask me how to do it, you just can't! And I don't talk to this kind of person anyways;-) !
I changed the main page and the mirror in french too btw.
